Windows 7 taking forever to shut down

I am running  Dell XPS 8900  Intel Core i7-6700 CPU A 3.40 GHz  8.00 GB RAM  64-little Operating System  Windows 7 Professional  Service Pack 1

My question:   Why can my computer take over twenty minutes to shut down?

That"s right - over twenty minutes.

You watching: Windows 7 taking forever to shut down

If I hit restart, "Log Off" takes around two minutes.

Then "Shutting Down" takes about one more twenty.

Once the display screen goes blank I get the boot-up sequence conveniently and also I am ago in service pretty conveniently.

It boots fine, however takes forever to shut dvery own.

It"s been doing this for a while however I am not certain just how long.

Old Phil:  I opened up Event Viewer & tright here is absolutely a lot of information in it.  Is tbelow any type of way to copy this.  Highlighting only appears to job-related on one line at a time.  Is tright here a way to quickly creat a record via the information?

John C_21:  This sounds close to what is happening.  So it appears as if a defense measure is causing the sluggish shut down as the computer erases all information that is saved.   Not a bad concept actually, but the shut dvery own is incredibly sluggish as a result.  I"m a small wary about editing and enhancing the registry; I"m simply not that much of an professional in computer.  is there any kind of various other method to do this?

Thank you both for your replies.

Old Phil  I tried to encompass some some display shots of Event Viewer yet the message would not send.   I understand tbelow is a means to connect these files however I always forget how it is done.

JohnC_21:  I watch what you are referring to if it is "Pro and Enterpclimb User: Use the Group Policy Editor".  If so, I will certainly have to research it for a while prior to I convince myself i am brave enough to use it (I am comfortable via computer systems but not at all knowledgeable).  I will be at this work site aobtain in a couple of days.  In the meantime, right here is a question - I have actually three computers at 3 sites - all are Windows 7.  This is the only one that takes so long to shut dvery own.  Could it be that this is the only among the 3 that gets rid of the page file?  If so, I wonder why?  I intend it is a good thing for protection to clear the web page file but it definitely takes an awfully lengthy time!

Personally, I do not think the page file clearing is the trouble as it takes 20 minutes and also tbelow is no means clearing a page file need to take that lengthy and it is a Security Plus to clear it.

I would certainly concentprice on initially booting to Safe Mode. When in Safe Mode shut dvery own. Does it take 20 minutes?

I am ago at the location of the machine in question. Now here"s something interesting:Earlier today I attempted to open up a internet browser and also it wouldn"t; or rather, it did, yet took minutes to do so.  Same with every other regimen I attempted to open.  Then I noticed that I lost my internet link (the lights on the cable modem were fine).  I rebooted and also got my Web link ago but the reboot still took a really lengthy time and programs still were slow. Then I remembered this this difficulty of programs taking incredibly lengthy to open also occurred a few months ago.  At that time I occurred to soptimal to a frifinish that suggested I go to Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Disk Cleanup and also run it.  And run it aget.  And aget.  And aobtain.  It addressed the sluggish to open regimen difficulty. So now this day, simply like a few months earlier, I ran Disk Cleanup multiple times. The initially round it cleaned a few little items and subsequent runs it cleaned bigger items, and also the last one smaller sized ones aacquire. And my browser and all the various other programs opened quickly. Hallelujah! So I did a couple of jobs and also then returned to Bleeping Computer.  I did as you said and also restarted to boot into Safe Mode to test your concept. As it transforms out, I didn"t should.  The machine took around a minute to Log Off (after i clicked to pressure cshed a routine - explorer exe I think but not positive)

And then, rather of forever before, the machine shut dvery own in one minute and then rebooted.

I didn"t bvarious other going into Safe Setting. So is tbelow clutter making the computer system take so lengthy to shut down?  And it re-accumulated so conveniently.  I remember among the larger items cleaned was something about Windows Updays I believe.I guess I am going to have to run Disk Cleanup extremely often, although I do not know why the computer accumulates so a lot clutter so conveniently.I just hope this wasn"t a fluke and also that the next time I rebegin (I very seldom either shut dvery own or restart) it boots up easily aacquire. And I agree, it might be a great concept for Windows to proceed to clear the web page papers.Any thoughts on this?Anypoint else you think I must do?Thank you.

Use CCleaner to clean up your Temp files yet carry out not use the registry cleaner. If you install it make sure you opt out of any type of programs it provides to install.

I would also look to check out how much area you have allocated to System Restore.

It was discussed on another thread that CBS logs deserve to accumulate and also fill up the disk.

I actually have actually always provided CCleaner and also I run it multiple times a day.  When I click "Registry" on the left of CCleaner tright here are 15 items, all are checked, and to the right, a inspect on "Problem   Data   Regisattempt Key".  I would imagine that this is the default configuration on set up as I never got in this Regisattempt part of CCleaner prior to..As for System Restore, I had a difficulty in the previous with my difficult drive getting fuller and also fuller.  I was instructed in this forum to alleviate the amount of room it would certainly take, and I did so.But now, I adhered to the route in the link you had - for some reason I seem to have actually system defense entirely turned off.  Should I rotate it back on?  I would imagine so.  What percentage would you recommend I collection the maximum to?My C/Windows/logs/CBS folder takes only 81.4 MB and also consists of five CBS.persist files.
