Our lab mix starting "grooming" his favorite cat buddy (we have two cats). The dog starts nibbling the cat until the cat turns over on his back and the dog nibbles at him head to tail. Cat normally seems to love it. What does this behavior mean? Affection?
Does the cat return the favor by walking on the dog doing that paw thing...the kneading action that cats will do? If so it would seem they have worked out a system....yes, affection.
Mutual grooming is one way that social animals strengthen and reaffirm bonds between individuals. So from the dog"s side it"s all about the "glue" that holds the pack together - even if the pack is multi-species and by grooming the cat, the dog is reaffirming that bond.As far as the cat"s concerned... it"s got a personal masseuse.

We don"t have cats, but my brother"s lab grooms their cat (he also grooms many of his stuffed toys). The dog and cat are very affectionate toward one another; when we visit with our dog, their dog will be very protective of the cat.

It"s a 2 way street at our house. Dog grooms cat(s), cat in turns cleans eyes, and paws. And does a little kneading on the dogs chest and belly. Serious "buddy" relationship going on!

That"s more than a buddy relationship! Come on, show the real picture, with the captions. Don"t be ashamed!

At my house the cat grooms the dog. She has been doing it since the day I brought the dog home from the shelter at 8 weeks old.
I can only wish! My cats won"t let my dog anywhere near them. They hiss and bat when she tries to sniff their butts. He"d probably groom them too if they would let them, but they do NOT like the doggy.Sounds like true canine-feline romance going on in your house!
I"ve never had dogs and cats together, and when I had cats they hated each other. The two dogs I have now, well Bella grooms Busters ears and Buster nibbles on Bella from time to time. I was a little shocked Buster was allowing her to do this, but he seems to like it and every once and a while will return the favor, but for the most part he"s greedy about it lol
