You are watching: What does bosom mean in the bible
My expertise is that the "bosom of the Father" is the correct translation according to what I read here.
I am struggling to understand the meaning of "The just begained child, which is in the bosom of the Father."
My thoughts are that the verse is speaking about Jesus prior to he involved Earth and his connection through God (his Father), however I am not really sure if my reasoning is correct.
How is the reader meant to understand also the phrase "In the bosom of the Father"?

The phase "in the bosom" (κολπον /kolpos) in this context conveys the eternal intimate communion between the Father and Son. Many bibles, even some paraphrases, do not transform the word "bosom". Probably because our English vernacular still supplies the word to express the seat of deep affection.
Albert Barnes commentary notes on this verse reads:
In the bosom of the Father - This expression is taken from the tradition among the Orientals of reclining at their meals. See the notes at Mat_23:6. It denotes intimacy, friendship, affection. Here it suggests that Jesus had actually a knowledge of God such as one friend has actually of an additional - understanding of his character, deindicators, and also nature which no various other one possesses, and which renders him, therefore, qualified over all others to make him known. (Albert Barnes Commentary)
Tbelow are a couple of OT referrals to this phase. When Nathan challenged King David about his adultery, he told him a parable about a beloved ewe lamb.
2Sa 12:3 however the bad guy had actually nothing, conserve one little bit ewe lamb, which he had actually bought and also nourimelted up: and it flourished up together with him, and also with his children; it did eat of his very own morsel, and drank of his very own cup, and lay in his bosom, and also was unto him as a daughter.(ASV)
In the NT the Apostle John is described in the NT as the "one that Jesus loved".
Jo 13:23 Tright here was at the table reclining in Jesus" bosom one of his disciples, whom Jesus loved.
Jesus no doubt loved every one of His disciples, yet there was an intimacy in between the inner 3 (Peter, James, John), and also in this instance, particularly, John, that Jesus did not share via everyone else. He collection them apart to present them and teach them points no one else proficient. (For examples see transfiguration and Jesus" selection of the 3 to pray at Gethsemane).
How is this all pertained to the Father and Son?
John 1:18 clintends that the guy Jesus of Nazareth is the unique Son of God. And bereason of their eternal unity of love, Jesus have the right to truly and also fully represent God in eincredibly method feasible. This reality rings loudly in numerous of Christ"s statements. Such as:
Jo 14:9 Jesus saith unto him, Have I been so long time through you, and also dost thou not know me, Philip? he that hath watched me hath seen the Father; how sayest thou, Sexactly how us the Father?
Or in relation to the Father making all things well-known to the Son. Just as Jesus made recognized mysteries to His disciples, and proceeds to present points to those He loves.
Jo 5:20 For the Father loveth the Son, and showeth him all things that himself doeth: and also better functions than these will certainly he present him, that ye may marvel.

If you recontact, in the bibles, the only times the Father"s voice is heard from heaven is once He is expushing the love of His Son. When the influenced writer desires to convey the concept that loves stems from the deepest part of their being, bosom closeness paints the perfect picture.
