If you are going to use Local Authentication through a username and password you must concern the "aaa new-model" command. By Default AAA is disabled on the 2960.

To Use username and password:

permit key let123me654in

aaa new-model

username admin privilege 15 password 7 let123me654in (the 7 provides the password hidden)

aaa authentication login default local

line vty 0 15

login local

For telnet accessibility via just a password:

enable trick let123me654in

line vty 0 15

password let123me654in

AAA can reprimary off. Enabling it is optional not compulsory.
Here"s the config from a production netoccupational that I connect to via SSH.

Yep, don"t turn on AAA unmuch less you"re going to use it, it opens up a entirety new have the right to of worms if not configured correctly!

Also, I"m pretty certain, if you review my first post that I offered you those commands!

Please re-read the initially comment, I explain why you should usage "secret" and not "password". To additionally demostprice, check out this hhttps://neighborhood.spicefunctions.com/how_to/96970-decrypt-md7-passwords-using-the-cisco-command-line

No, the login regional on the "line vty" lines will enable this, allow aaa will likewise perform this, however aaa is massively powerful and unmuch less utilizing TACACS or RADIAS authenication, I would indicate it is unimportant configuration, and also anypoint not necessary have to be removed. Additional unsupplied configuration might seem harmmuch less, but eexceptionally line of configuration that"s not necessary could pose a security danger. Here"s a guide to AAA that"s nice and also simple to read! https://learningnetwork.cisco.com/docs/DOC-7905

That is all you need! Also, your actual password if you duplicated this in would be "7 let123me654in" the "7"" and also a space would develop component of the password as it"s not an already encrypted password and also you deserve to kind in "let123me654in" as much as you want, it won"t work!
A room is a valid character in a Cisco password, add one at the finish of a password and also don"t tell anyone, it"s hilarious as you deserve to log in,. but others that you offered the password to can"t! If you are inplacing encrypted passwords, by that I expect copy and pasting one from another configuration, then you put the 7 and a room in, this de-notes it is a MD7 password, also, if MD5 it woudl be a 5 and an area.

Putting a password on a line vty line after configuring a username and password and "login local" is pointless as it will not be provided, as you"ve told the switch to usage the local database of users (login local) and also developed a user, aacquire remove uncrucial configuration.
Also, the enable trick password will not be supplied either if you give the user privileged 15, the enable trick is their to raise your privilege to 15 from a lower level. if you produce another user, assign it privileged 7, you"d need the enable key password to obtain to User exec mode.
